Cotabato City – In a bid to nurture the next generation of career scientists, the “Be a Career Scientist!” Orientation and Mentoring event were conducted on February 20-21, 2024. Held at the Function Hall Room 1 of the Paragon Hotel and Restaurant, the event drew a diverse array of participants eager to delve into the ethical principles and transparency integral to scholarly pursuits.
Attended by different researchers coming from different offices and prestigious academe, including the research figures in the Development Academy of the Bangsamoro (DAB) represented by the Chief of Center of Research and Policy Development, Ms. Fairodz P. Taalim, Juharto L. Usop, DMO III, and Benladin K. Unotan, DMO I, the event served as a platform to equip attendees with the necessary tools and insights to navigate the world of academia with integrity and rigor. Emphasizing the importance of credibility and dependability in scholarly publications, the orientation and mentoring sessions aimed to instill a strong sense of ethical responsibility among future career scientists.
Throughout the two-day program, participants engaged in discussions, presentations, and mentoring sessions tailored to address various facets of a career in science. Topics ranged from about Scientific Career System, Predatory Research Journals and Conferences, Ethics for Researchers, the DOST Magna Carta Benefits among others.
Reflecting on the significance of the event, during the mentoring session as Ms. Taalim remarked, “The Development Academy of the Bangsamoro, as research arm of the Bangsamoro Government is mandated to cultivate an output-producing bureaucracy. With this end in mind, our goal is to empower aspiring career scientists through research and policy studies with the knowledge and ethical framework essential for success in their careers. By upholding the principles of transparency and integrity, we not only strengthen the scientific community but also contribute to the enabling environment, advancing knowledge and innovation in the Bangsamoro.”

Suralta, Career Sciebtist III pf Philippine Rice Research Institute, DA, Dr. Maria Corazon A. De Ungria, Career Scientist IV of Natural Sciences Research Institute, UP-Diliman, Atty. Shiela O. Valino of Administrative and Legal Service, Legal Division, DOST, Dr. Casiano, H. Choresca, Jr., Career Sceintist I of National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, DA, and Dr. Leny C. Galvez, Career Scientist I of Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority, DA. Also in attendance were Dr. Imelda Angeles-Agdeppa, Retired Career Scientist IV (DOST-FNRI) Forester Arsenio B. Ella, Retired Career Scientist III (DOST-FPRDI), Dr. Evelyn B. Gergon, Retired Career Scientist I (Philippine Association of Career Scientist, Inc.), Dr. Merdelyn T. The activity was concluded with a sense of optimism and determination among participants, who departed equipped with newfound knowledge and a renewed sense of purpose in their pursuit of scientific excellence. As BARMM continues to emerge as a hub of academic and scientific innovation, initiatives like the “Be a Career Scientist!” Orientation and Mentoring event are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the region’s scientific landscape for years to come.
